Handling a bratty child

7 posts in this topic

It's not really our child but usually we find brats in public where the parents don't do something. In one appliance store, there was this little of girl, about 5 years old, opening the refrigerators and then banging the door shut. On the second time the girl did that, I called her attention and asked for her parents. There they were, talking with a sales attendant for a washing machine and their little girl is doing havoc in the area of refrigerators. The parents were apologetic when I pointed out what their lovely girl was doing. That is just a sample of the countless brats I have encountered in public.

I think discipline with kids is important from a young age, they should grow up knowing respect and the trouble with today is they have taken this away. When I was younger in the UK if I did something bad I would get a smack, I'm not saying go really hard because that would be abuse though a little tap does not hurt anyone. Also if I was to swear I would get soap in my mouth, today both of these are seen as abuse and I think taking this away is the reason why we have kids like this today. I grew up respecting people and to not use bad language because of the old methods. Today I see kids who have no respect for anyone and no one can seem to touch them, they are allowed to be like that. Some would say you have to go down to eye level and say bad girl or boy or put them on the naughty step, this does not work for all kids trust me I know because my parents foster children. I hate seeing kids destroying public property that winds me up and the other day saw a kid hitting his head on the bus stop, that is not normal behavior and the other kid was cheering him on. These are the sort of people we are bringing up into this world, people who will grow up with no respect for others, animals and not want to do anything with their lives they will just claim benefits and we will end up paying for them. I really don't have any hope for the future generations I'm sorry to say because these will be the future parents, great role models.

Of course there are some good parents that do well and good for them but I really do see a lot of disrespectful kids today, you look at the parents and this is the reason for it.

I have seen some truly unruly children in stores, restaurants, and other public places. Parents need to step up. I understand that they are embarrassed, but it's more embarrassing to allow the bad behavior to continue.

If a child cannot or will not behave in a public place then the child should be removed. For example, a child throws a tantrum in the grocery store. Gently take the child by the hand and leave. Just leave everything there and walk outside. If possible return when the child can act right. If the child continues to misbehave, leave altogether and go home. Perhaps use the time out technique once at home.

It's inconvenient, but you most likely won't have to leave too many times before the child gets the idea that unacceptable behavior won't just be ignored. Children need to understand that disrupting an entire store, restaurant, or other area and disturbing other people is not acceptable.

I don't have kids however, we are planning to have kids soon. In the mean time we are reading books and articles on raising kids.My wife and I both have opinion that it is necessary to give punishment for  bratty child and reward the child who acts good, Reward and punishment works for children.

Lol. I can understand about what you mentioned. Even I have faced this situation many time when kids are doing lots of unusual things and their parents are doing nothing for that. Sometimes it become really irritating because of those parents as they are doing nothing.  I don't blame kids for this thing, as parents are the one who should take care of this thing.

I totally agree with you on this.  Only parents could be held accountable for such behavior of kids.  One of my neighbors’ kid was very stubborn and never pay heed to any advice given by parents or anybody.  He was not even interested to do his homework on time.  One day his mother cut the cable TV connection and told him that she would not let him see his favorite shows unless and until he is ready to listen to her and do his homework.  Finally the kid has to give in after two days and his mother is very happy about him now.

So, I think by denying something which is very dear to your child can be fruitful.  I am against yelling at kids or  punishing them in other ways.  They are in their learning stage and it is quite natural to do mistakes.  But we should let them know that what he/she has done just now is not good.

Agree with you. Parents should teach to their children about their behavior. They should behave well whenever they are outside and with someone. Beating them and yelling them is not the solution for sure but letting to do them those things is not proper either. So they should teach them.
